They order lattes and talk and frown in my nasty bathroom, my coffee maker breaks down in the middle of the hour and I have to drop everything to fix it slowly, a cat howls because the lunch box is empty, I’m left without coffee beans and I’m gone.
Townspeople come and go, get cold and psss– Caring for howling and meowing cats for attention. But after adding an espresso machine and going through surprisingly extensive design paths, my coffee quickly gets hectic. I feed the city’s stray dogs, feed them to gain their trust, and quickly make two laps around the cafe to please the customers while the tap water pours. The humble beginning of my cat cafe (which I call Feline Fine) means my first few days in the game were relatively uneventful. Projects help you expand your cafe by adding new menu items, more seats or staff – the latter quickly becomes necessary. You can go to the stores to buy cat furniture, food and supplies using the map in the lower left corner of the screen, or head to the cat shelter to choose your next project to work on. This is how you clean cat urine, serve drinks, tidy the toilet, and cook with your skill level, which determines how long each will last. The mechanics are incredibly simple: use your WASD keys to go to a command prompt and hold to complete tasks. Each visitor pays you in a different currency that can be used to buy different things, so if you’re short on fish and you really need a new bin, you can simply advertise your cafe to fishermen in hopes of making up for the difference quickly. Your cafe starts out modestly: As the sole employee in a cafe built with a few basics, serve water to the vagrants and pretzels to the witches until you earn enough to buy more equipment and supplies. The story helps make Cat Cafe Manager even more fun, especially when you discover that there is a mysticism in the feline inhabitants of Caterwaul, an ancient force that sleeps in their fields. The story here is deep: a fisherman named Bonner is a forgotten gay old man, a space witch named Carla-Lalla is loudly wondering about the quality of his life choices, a bubbly businessman considers selling the town’s soul to a big demonic shadow. Caterwaul is filled with fishermen, artists, vagrants, witches and businessmen who want to satiate their appetites with Italian espresso, pretzels and cat snuggles, and it’s your job to provide all of that (and more). Cat Cafe Manager starts off like a good Lifetime movie: you, a young city boy, travel to a remote village called Caterwaul to run your deceased grandmother’s cat cafe.
